Bringing home your kitten

How to do it right without unnecessarily scaring your new baby bengal kitten

At Diamond W Bengals, we provide top-quality care for your kitten and expect you will do the same. One thing I wanted to go over is the pick up day.  I don’t know if it’s misunderstood or maybe inexperience or maybe even lack of knowledge which is fine , but I will explain below because I’ve had people actually start to take their bengal kitten out of their travel carrier upon pick up. Please do not do that! I will provide you with a carrier to get them home safely.

Most often you’ll be meeting at the vets for pick up as we are a closed conscientious and very clean cattery. We also intend to keep it that way and free from diseases many people can inadvertently carry on them.  If we decide upon another meeting place, or if your kitten nanny (or myself ) fly your kitten to you, please do NOT take the baby out in a strange environment.  Kittens aren’t stuffed dolls! They will be nervous and may get scared and try to jump out of your arms, possibly resulting in an injury. They are not puppies that will just sit on your lap the first day in the car.  They want to explore. You are driving. You have brake and gas petals.

LEAVE the poor baby in her /his travel carrier until you are home.
It is very simple.  Leave your kitten in their travel carrier which they have become accustomed to before pick up.  Bring your carrier inside your home and set in a small bedroom or bathroom area. Open your carrier and let the baby come to you. Let them explore a small area, find their litter box and food. Keep it to one or two people in the room for a bit. Remember this is a baby kitten not a toy to be passed around.  Let him/her get adjusted to their new environment.  Sit back and enjoy watching for a bit before introducing to the rest of the household.

Your job is to show the kitten you are safe and to keep them safe by bringing them home properly. You also want to keep you and your family safe while driving. When your kitten has adjusted to their new home and harness then you can enjoy all the car rides you want. She/he will even start letting you know they want to go and a choose words like “ time for a ride”, “time for a walk” etc. Bengals are extremely smart and will wait at the door for you and let you know they are ready to go.
